When was the whiskey sour cocktail invented?

Traditionally made from whiskey, lemon juice and simple syrup, the whiskey sour cocktail has been around for ages. If you think of a whiskey sour cocktail, you’d be wise to picture it in the hands of a pirate from the earlier days, as this is where this cocktail first came about. Although it was first used as a way to make drinking poor quality water a bit easier and combat certain sealife illnesses, it soon evolved into something a bit more sophisticated in the 18th century.

It officially became the famous whiskey sours we know today in the mid 18th century. The original recipe calls for a small tumbler type glass, shavings of ice, Seltzer, powdered sugar and bourbon or rye whiskey.

To add to its long list of success, the whiskey sours even makes headlines in a very famous Marilyn Monroe classic, The Seven Year Itch, where Richard Sherman jokingly refers to the whiskey sours as being part of the breakfast he already enjoyed that morning.

Whiskey sour cocktail origin

The whiskey sour cocktail boasts a few different varieties, however, the results remain the same. After crafting this delicious blend you’ll have a drink with the perfect balance between something sour and something sweet.

Although its official origin takes it back to 1862 with its inventor said to be a Mr Jerry Thomas who first mentioned it in his writings in The Bartenders Guide, we’ll let you decide what story you think fits the famous whiskey sour best. Pirates or bartending aficionado, you choose.
